Preschoolers Department (Deaconess Peggy Leong)
In 2008, besides the usual Sunday activities, we had an outing to Pasir Ris Park in May, an Open Sunday in June and a 3-day Vacation Bible School (VBS) in November with the theme “Space Adventure”. There was a good turnout of children for VBS with half from non-Christian families. Thank God for opportunity to sow the gospel seed in the hearts of the children. We pray that the seed sown will take root and grow bountifully in the days ahead.
The Preschoolers Sunday School had an initial average attendance of 12 at the beginning of the year. With the move of Preacher Lim Ren Muh and his family to Kajang in September, we were reduced to an average of 9 children.
The upgrading of the Education Block also caused some changes. Since March, Sunday School lessons were conducted in the Youth Hall, “The Ekklesia”. Due to space constraint, we merged the 2 classes into one. We moved into the upgraded premises in August and continued to have one class as we found that the 2 younger ones are more active and receptive with the older children around.
Thank God for teachers and the faithful teaching of His Word to the little children (4 to 6 years old). It is such a joy to watch the children grow physically as well as eagerly learning and increasing in their knowledge of God’s Word. In God’s own time, may the salvation grace of God reach down to these little ones.
Thank God for a fruitful year and His enabling in all that was accomplished in 2008. All glory to God!
Primaries Department (Mrs Cheryll Boon)
We thank the Lord our God for His bountiful blessings and constant guidance upon us during 2008. The theme chosen was “To be a good Christian example”, based on Luke 2:52 “And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man”. Our children were challenged to be obedient and responsible Christians, drawing inspiration from our supreme example, the boy Jesus Christ and His life. There are three classes - JOY KIDS (7-8 years old), GRACE KIDS (9-10 years old) and KINDNESS KIDS (11-12 years old). Indeed, we are very grateful for God has provided 9 Bible Teachers and 8 Activity Leaders, sufficient to minister to a total of 28 students with 4 new children joining the SS this year. The curriculum covered was as follows:

Besides the regular Sunday School Lessons, a Junior Bible Challenge Quiz was organized involving 6 teams, competing in 4 rounds before the finals held on Open Sunday, June 8. Thank the Lord that this quiz had stimulated our children’s interest in reading and studying more deeply into God’s Holy Word. The focus of the quiz was The 5 Cs of History - Creation, Corruption, Catastrophe, Confusion and Christ. Another highlight of the SS programme was the Vacation Bible School (VBS) held in November, this being our main outreach activity to our neighbourhood children. Our own SS children enjoyed the VBS and were spiritually enriched by the messages and Bible Learning Activities. We thank those church members for making special effort in inviting other children (32 of them) to attend the VBS, giving them the opportunity to hear the gospel. Below is a summary of our activities conducted in 2008:

As a follow-up, a 7-week Home Bible Study Course (‘Get Rooted in Gods Word’ - The 7 C’s of History) was introduced to our VBS contacts. Please pray for God’s wisdom and strength on the follow-up team (Cheryll, Jeanette, Melissa, Clarice, Amy, Dorcas, Colleen, Eunice and Cheryl) as they help the VBS contacts to study God’s Word. Finally, we thank God for a fruitful year, and we also appreciate the efforts, prayers, support and encouragement given by the SS teachers, activity leaders, adult and youth volunteers and parents in 2008. Certainly, your labour of love in the Lord will not be in vain. (1 Corinthians 15:58 “….be ye steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord…”). Here is a poem to spur us on in the Lord’s service as we continue into 2009:
There’s a course that must be finished, there’s a race that must be run, There’s a mission to accomplish, and a battle to be won. We’ve been called to take the challenge by God’s might and through His Son; He will give us grace to complete the race, moving forward, pressing on!

Report on Sunday School Outing 7 June 2009 Mrs Clarice Lee
Praise and thank God for a wonderful Sunday School outing at the Botanic Gardens on Saturday, 30 May 2009. Our loving Heavenly Father blessed us with a bright, refreshing morning and 21 children (some are new friends) turned up with parents and teachers for the event.
We had our activities on the lawn facing the Symphony Stage with vast greenery around us. We had a relaxing time of singspiration led by Mrs Cheryll Boon, followed by a message on “Who am I?” by Brother Lim Jun Sheng. He shared from God’s Word on how God used Moses, who was once a prince of Egypt, then became a shepherd and subsequently made to be a leader by God to deliver the Israelites out of the bondage of the Egyptian Pharaoh. God can use anyone to serve Him including ourselves, with whatever talents He has given us. Besides learning God’s Word, we had lots of fun during games time. All thanks to our Game Master Brother Philip Ong who got the group well integrated. In the midst of the games, God sent strong winds and dark clouds. We had to end the games and finished our snacks quickly before the rain came. Thank God for providing the many willing hands in the preparation of the refreshments which everyone enjoyed. Indeed, the Lord was good. Finally the rain descended upon us but we managed to take shelter. Thank God also for granting safety and protection to all throughout the event and thanks to all who have helped in one way or another in making the outing so enjoyable.
My personal experience with inviting children to church is that sometimes they are fearful or their parents may disapprove of them attending church. So, Sunday School outing is another channel whereby we can invite them to learn God’s Word in a different environment informally. Outdoor learning will bring about a different experience and allow greater interaction with each other. Try to avail yourself to participate in future outings and at the same time, be an ambassador for Christ by inviting your neighbourhood friends and classmates to learn of our Saviour Jesus Christ. May the Lord bless you.

Report On Sunday School Teachers' Retreat 8 March 2009 Brother Khoo Peng Keong The first Sunday School Teachers’ Retreat for 2009 was held from 4 - 6pm on Saturday, 28 Feb at Calvary Pandan. A workshop on “Leading Children to Truly Worship God” was conducted for the twenty Sunday School teachers and assistants present. Mrs Cheryll Boon led us in the singspiration, after which Mrs Jemima Khoo, from True Life B-P Church spoke on the topic given. She covered quite a lot within an hour, defining “Worship” and the types of worship for children of various age groups. Deuteronomy 31:12 tells us that even the children are to be gathered “that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the Lord your God, and observe to do all the words of this law.” We learnt that worship included Music, Prayer, Scripture and Scripture Memorisation, Offering and the Bible Lesson. We were reminded on the importance of the teacher’s preparation and the work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. We benefited very much from the many practical tips shared by the speaker. Teaching in Sunday School is unlike secular teaching. Whether teaching songs or the Bible, we need the Holy Spirit to bring illumination and conviction in the heart. Sometimes we get carried away with action songs and soon forget to make sure that each song must carry a spiritual message. God can use the words of children’s songs to touch the hearts of the parents at home too. After the tea break, we divided into five groups to discuss the challenges facing Sunday School teachers in the classroom today. Though time was limited, we were able to learn from each other through the sharing. The groups made their presentations, ending with a word of prayer by Dns Peggy Leong. Submitted by Bro. SUNDAY SCHOOL PRIMARIES 2009 by Mrs Cheryll Boon
Theme Is anyone too young to serve the Lord? If a child asks you, ‘How old must I be to serve the Lord’? Would you reply, ‘Well, to serve the Lord, you have to be about 14 years, 3 months and 3 days!’? Of course, not! We must tell our children that anyone, adult or child, no matter what his or her age, can serve God. All they need is to be a Christian and to be willing. Therefore, the theme chosen for our Sunday School in 2009 is Christian Service. God’s will for every true Christian is “Only fear the Lord, and SERVE Him in truth with all your heart…” This means that if we truly love God, we should give our time, talents and possessions to serve God by doing His work. Our theme verse is Romans 12:1 – “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, [which is] your reasonable service.”
It is our hope and prayer that every parent in Tengah will encourage their children to start serving the Lord at a young age as the Bible says, ‘He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much.’ (Luke 16:10).
Classes & Curriculum The Primaries Department has a total of 28 children grouped into 3 classes, with 9 Bible Lesson Teachers and 8 Activity Leaders. The regular Sunday School (duration of 2 hours, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.) starts with Assembly (singspiration & opening activities), continues with Bible Lessons, and ends with other activities related to the Bible Lesson (Art & Craft, Cooking Sessions, VCD/DVD shows, quiz and discussion). | Classes | Curriculum | Bible Teachers | Activity Leaders | | JOY KIDS | Salvation Series, Parables of Jesus | Mrs Eunice Chong Mrs Melissa Phoa Mrs Oon Siew Heok | Miss Jovena Choo Mrs Rosa Tan Miss Rossellini Tan | | GRACE KIDS | Lessons on the Bible, Miracles of Jesus, Christian Heroes | Mrs Cheryll Boon Mrs Sherri Poh Mrs Colleen Yap | Mr Jack Lau Mrs Cheryll Boon Mrs Sheena Goh | | KINDNESS KIDS | Lessons on Elijah & Elisha Fruit of the Spirit | Mr Khoo Peng Keong Mr Ling Yoong Ern Mrs Amy Seah | Dr Lee Ngo Hock Mrs Janet Long | Awards & Motivation An important aspect of our Sunday School is the motivation of our students in the study of God’s Word and the development of Godly Christian character traits. This is the basis for our annual presentation of awards (medals, vouchers or certificates) on Open Sunday in June and during Thanksgiving Party in December. Students are rewarded for their attendance, Bible Verse Memorization as well as good class behaviour. In addition, our teachers must have the love and patience with the spirit of encouragement, in order to achieve our objectives.
Calendar Besides the regular Sunday School Sessions, we have planned other meaningful activities as follows: | Date | Activity | Time | | Jan 17, Sat | VBS 08 Echo/Pizza Party | 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. | | Feb 28, Sat | SS Teacher’s Retreat I | 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. | | Apr 12, Sun | Resurrection Sunday Celebration | 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. | | May 30, Sat | SS Outing | 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 noon | | June 7, Sun | Open Sunday (musical cum awards) | 4:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. | | Aug 22, Sat | SS Teacher’s Retreat II cum Teacher’s Day Dinner | 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. | | Sept 27, Sun | Children’s Day Celebration | 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. | | Oct 25, Sun | Reformation Sunday (Primaries only) | 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. | | Nov 25 to 27, Wed to Fri | Vacation Bible School: Mount Zion Marathon | 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 pm. | | Dec 20, Sun | Christmas Party | 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. | | Dec 27, Sun | Thanksgiving Party | 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. | Gospel Outreach We strongly believe that God wants us to reach out to our neighbourhood children with the gospel of Christ. Therefore, we strongly encourage our church members to bring children to participate in Sunday School and in other special activities like outing, Children’s Day Celebration, Vacation Bible School, etc.
Finally, the success of the Sunday School depends on 1. YOU, the faithful Sunday School teacher in teaching God’s Word; 2. YOU, the enthusiastic Activity Leader in stimulating the interest in God’s Word; 3. YOU, the diligent student in studying God’s Word; and 4. YOU, the supportive parent in praying and encouraging God’s work. |

VBS 2008 Echo / Pizza Party 25 January 2009 Mrs Cheryll Boon Thank the Lord for a wonderful and blessed time at the VBS '08 Echo cum Pizza Party, held on Saturday, 17 January 2009, in the home of Preacher Kelvin Wong and his family. At 2:30 p.m., the children from the neighbourhood came streaming in, with excited and happy faces. A total of 24 children and 10 adults attended the gathering. I was pleasantly surprised that some of our VBS contacts brought their neighbours too! The afternoon programme began with some ice-breaking games led by Dns Peggy Leong, followed by singspiration time by Auntie Dorcas. The children enjoyed singing the songs they learned at the VBS ‘08. Next, the children listened as Preacher Kelvin presented a short message: "I am fearfully and wonderfully made!" with some attractive power-point slides. The next highlight - the VBS '08 Slide Show, was much anticipated by the children. They watched the show intently, with sounds of glee and laughter. The show, kindly prepared by Uncle Ting Kok, certainly brought back pleasant memories of their VBS experiences. At last, as the pizzas, drinks and desserts were served, every food item was wiped out by the hungry children. And not even a piece of pizza was left. What a memorable and worthwhile afternoon all of us had! We hope and pray that God, who has started this good work among the neighbourhood children, will continue it until Jesus comes again. |
